Saharawi media activist sentenced to 10 years in prison

A Moroccan court in occupied city of El Aaiun on Tuesday handed a 10 year sentence and 100 Moroccan Dirham fine to Saharawi activist and citizen journalist Mahmoud   (El Kouiri ) on charges of “belonging to a criminal gang, taking part in a murder, contributing to a public disturbance, battery resulting in death, vandalism of public property, and assaulting officials in the performance of their duties,” vague charges that are typically broght against Saharawi activists and journalists

On June 6th , 2022, Khambir was arrested inside police headquarters in El Aaiun as he intented to renew his identification card.

At the time of his arrest, Moroccan police  informed Kambir’s family that there had been a search and arrest warrant issued for him, however, Khambir was not made aware of the charges he faced.

As a reminder Mahmoud Kambir is a media activist affiliated with Samara News, one of the few independent media outlets in occupied Western Sahara
