Saharawi Activist Highlights Challenges to Peace in Western Sahara

El Aaiun- Occupied Western Sahara

20/05/2023

In a recent interview with Equipe Media, Saharawi activist Moulay Lehcen Douihi shed light on the hurdles facing peace-building efforts between the Moroccan regime and the Sahrawi people. Douihi’s insights provide valuable perspective on the daunting task of achieving a peaceful resolution in Western Sahara.

Douihi emphasized the virtual impossibility of peace if the Moroccan regime’s Foreign Minister and its representative to the United Nations refuse to negotiate or engage in dialogue with the Sahrawi people, whom they dismissively label as the ‘roadblock faction.’ This stance directly affects the Sahrawi living under occupation.

Furthermore, Douihi highlighted the manipulation of the Moroccan people by their own system, which perpetuates a stereotypical image of the Sahrawi people and their cause. This portrayal fosters misunderstanding and hinders genuine empathy and understanding between the Moroccan and Sahrawi communities.

The Saharawi activist also called attention to the exclusive control the Moroccan regime maintains over the Western Sahara file, distancing itself from the concerns and aspirations of the Moroccan people.

Douihi firmly argued that true peace can only be achieved by recognizing and respecting the rights of the Sahrawi people. Peace, security, stability, and development in the Maghreb region are contingent upon addressing the legitimate concerns of the Sahrawi people, including their inalienable right to self-determination.

The activist concluded by stressing the need for the restoration of rights and the pursuit of justice in any genuine peace-building endeavor. Understanding the historical and political context of the Sahrawi people’s struggle is essential for fostering trust, meaningful dialogue, and reconciliation between the Moroccan and Sahrawi communities.

Douihi’s perspective highlights the complex challenges faced in achieving peace in Western Sahara.
