Sahrawi Activist Fatimatu Dahwar Reveals Morocco’s Isolation and Growing Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination

Equipe Media – Occupied Western Sahara

May 31, 2023

In an interview with Equipe Media, Sahrawi political activist and former victim of enforced disappearance Fatimatu Dahwar spoke about the growing international isolation of Morocco and the increasing support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. The interview took place as part of the international week of solidarity with non-self-governing territories.

Dahwar, who spent 16 years in secret prisons in Akdez and the Kalaat M’Gouna fortress, said that Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara is becoming increasingly untenable. She pointed to the fact that the United Nations has repeatedly called for a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people, and that most countries in the world now support the Sahrawi right to self-determination.

Dahwar said that Morocco’s isolation is due to its refusal to comply with international law and its human rights abuses against the Sahrawi people. She described Morocco’s occupation as a “crime against humanity” and emphasized the need for the international community to take action to end it.

Dahwar urged the international community to support the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and to exert pressure on Morocco to comply with international law. She emphasized the determination of the Sahrawi people to achieve their right to self-determination, stating that they will continue their struggle until they attain freedom.”
