The Biden administration has been accused of hypocrisy on international law after condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine while ignoring the illegal annexations of the Golan Heights and Western Sahara by its allies, Israel and Morocco.
The Biden administration is the only government in the world that formally recognizes Israel’s illegal annexation of Syria’s Golan Heights. It has also provided Morocco with military aid and recognition of its illegal annexation of Western Sahara.
In a blog on his Facebook account, Stephen Zunes, a professor of international law at Stanford University, say that the Biden administration’s double standard is not only hypocritical, it is also dangerous. It sends the message that international law only applies to those who are not considered friends of the United States.
The Biden administration has defended its record on international law, arguing that it is taking a “pragmatic” approach. However, critics say that the administration’s approach is simply a way to justify its support for its allies, regardless of whether they are violating international law.”
