In a short video, we present the powerful and harrowing story of Bachir Khadda, a brave citizen journalist and coordinator of video archives for Equipe Media. At 38 years old, Bachir’s life took a dramatic turn when he was arrested in December 2010 in occupied El Aaiun on false allegations of participating in the Gdeim Izik camp protests. The protests were met with a violent crackdown by Moroccan security forces, and Bachir was accused of being a key organizer.
Bachir Khadda vehemently denies the charges, stating that he had never even visited the camp. Despite this, in May 2011, he reported to international human rights observers that he was subjected to torture by the police, including beatings, sleep deprivation, and electric shocks. He was also coerced into signing a confession while blindfolded.
A prominent activist, Bachir was already well-known by the occupiers. In 2007, he served 10 months in the notorious Black Prison for his participation in a peaceful demonstration. Yet, despite facing adversity, Bachir remained steadfast in his commitment to truth and justice.
Presently, Bachir Khadda is held in solitary confinement, cut off from contact with other prisoners. This form of isolation is a form of retaliation and psychological torture. Equipe Media stands firmly against such cruel treatment and calls on all followers and supporters to join a special campaign to release all Saharawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons and to hold those responsible accountable.
