Last Friday, as part of the ongoing advocacy efforts of Equipe Media, a significant event unfolded within the framework of the EH Bildu Irunberri conference series. This gathering provided a platform not only for discussions within the EH Bildu Irunberri context but also for Equipe Media to further its mission of raising awareness about the Sahara conflict.

The conference, serving as the third and final installment of the series, offered attendees from the Basque community a profound exploration into the complexities surrounding the Sahara conflict. Featured prominently were Nazha El Khalidi and Ahmed Ettanji of Equipe Media, whose presence and insights proved invaluable.

Equipe Media, led by Ahmed Ettanji and comprising committed journalists like El Khalidi, has been steadfast in its commitment to reporting on the Western Sahara conflict. Their dedication to documenting and disseminating information has earned them widespread recognition for amplifying the struggles and aspirations of the Sahrawi people.

At the conference, El Khalidi and Ettanji not only provided firsthand accounts and meticulous reporting but also highlighted the daunting challenges faced by Sahrawi journalists and human rights defenders. They emphasized the grave consequences of their work, particularly under the oppressive tactics employed by Moroccan occupying authorities, who criminalize their activities.

Specifically, the plight of Sahrawi political prisoners, including journalists incarcerated for their reporting, was brought to the forefront. Ettanji and El Khalidi underscored how these individuals, in daring to shed light on the situation, find themselves behind bars with heavy sentences, sending a chilling message to other Sahrawi activists.

Their insights illuminated the intricate socio-political dynamics at play in the region, offering a nuanced perspective that resonated deeply with the audience and furthered the mission of Equipe Media’s advocacy efforts.
