Occupied Western Sahara

In a recent video statement translated by Equipe Media into English and Arabic, Carmelo Ramírez Marrero, the Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity Advisor and President of the State Federation of Solidarity Institutions with the Sahara, vehemently condemned Pedro Sánchez’s remarks endorsing Moroccan control over the Western Sahara territory.

Ramírez expressed deep concern over Sánchez’s statement during his visit to Morocco, where he voiced support for the Moroccan occupation of the Western Sahara. Ramírez characterized this endorsement as a blatant violation of humanitarian law and international norms, emphasizing the infringement upon the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people.

According to Ramírez, the Western Sahara conflict is not merely a territorial dispute but a crucial issue of decolonization and self-determination. He stressed the necessity of resolving the matter in accordance with United Nations resolutions, which advocate for the rights of the Sahrawi people to determine their own future.

Ramírez rebuked Sánchez’s stance as a shameful betrayal of the Sahrawi people, particularly highlighting Spain’s historical responsibility as the former administering power of the Western Sahara. He underscored the moral obligation of Spain to support the self-determination and independence of the Sahrawi people, rather than legitimizing Moroccan occupation.
