In a significant diplomatic move, Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba met with Sahrawi Ambassador Hamdi Mayara in Windhoek today, highlighting Namibia’s unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The meeting, held amidst a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions, underscored President Mbumba’s commitment to supporting the Sahrawi people’s quest for self-determination.

Ambassador Mayara, who serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and plenipotentiary of SADR to both Angola and Namibia, briefed President Mbumba on the latest developments concerning Western Sahara. Of particular concern were the human rights abuses and illegal resource exploitation faced by the Sahrawi people following Morocco’s breach of the ceasefire in November 2020. These issues, violating international legitimacy and the resolutions of bodies such as the United Nations and the African Union, have drawn global attention and condemnation.

The discussions between President Mbumba and Ambassador Hamdi Mayara not only addressed the challenges but also emphasized the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Namibia and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Both parties expressed a mutual desire to enhance these ties, reflecting on shared histories of resistance against apartheid and colonialism. Namibia’s steadfast support for the Sahrawi cause, dating back to its own struggle for independence, resonates as a beacon of hope for many African nations.

President Mbumba reiterated Namibia’s enduring commitment to standing by the Sahrawi people until the complete decolonization of Western Sahara is achieved. This principled stance aligns Namibia with a broader African consensus in advocating for justice and sovereignty for all African nations, particularly those still under occupation.
