Equipe Media Occupied Western Sahara
August 16, 2024 – The Government of Namibia has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the recent decision by the French government to endorse Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. In a strongly worded statement, Namibia condemned France’s move as a blatant violation of international law and a disregard for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Namibia emphasized that the issue of Western Sahara is fundamentally a decolonization matter and cannot be resolved through bilateral agreements that bypass the established United Nations processes. The Namibian government asserted that France’s position undermines decades of UN efforts to secure a peaceful and just resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.
Namibia’s statement further accused France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, of becoming complicit in Morocco’s ongoing occupation and the associated human rights abuses against the Sahrawi people. The Namibian government warned that such actions, driven by narrow national interests, cannot legitimize foreign occupation.
Reaffirming its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to independence, Namibia pledged continued commitment to the UN-led peace processes and called for a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara question.
