On Friday, October 4, 2024, a group of Sahrawi women in the occupied city of El Aaiun celebrated the European Court of Justice’s recent ruling, which rejected the EU’s appeal meant to maintain trade agreements with Morocco. The women hailed the decision as a victory for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, which had been distorted by these agreements.
Waving the flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, the protesters chanted slogans condemning the Moroccan occupation’s ongoing abuses against the Sahrawi people, particularly the systematic and excessive plundering of the region’s natural resources. They called on the international community to intervene and ensure that the court’s decision is universally applied, not just by European nations.
In response to the peaceful protest, the occupying authorities retaliated against Sahrawi human rights defender Khadijatou Duih. Her car was vandalized, with its windows smashed and tires slashed.
It is important to note that the Moroccan occupying authorities continue to deny the Sahrawi people their right to peaceful assembly and protest in the occupied territories. Furthermore, foreign observers and journalists are barred from accessing these areas, hindering efforts to expose the full extent of the human rights abuses taking place.
