A Sahrawi student, El-Hussein Bourkaba, has initiated an open-ended hunger strike inside Ait Melloul 1 prison, located near Agadir, Morocco. According to the Sahrawi Students’ Media Committee in Agadir, the action is a protest against the prison administration’s arbitrary denial of family visits.

Bourkaba, who has been serving a 10-year sentence since June 2024, has faced a pattern of mistreatment, including isolation and poor living conditions. His recent hunger strike follows previous attempts to highlight the abuses he has endured.

Sahrawi human rights advocates argue that Bourkaba’s imprisonment and harsh treatment are a form of retaliation for his support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. They contend that his trial was marred by a lack of evidence and international observers.
