The United States has reaffirmed its support for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) as the mission prepares for its mandate renewal.
In a tweet today, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michele Sison highlighted her meeting with MINURSO’s head, Alexander Ivanko, praising the mission’s achievements over the past year. She emphasized the mission’s vital role as the sole international presence authorized to monitor, investigate, observe, and report on the situation in Western Sahara.
Sison reiterated the United States’ commitment to working with the UN Security Council to ensure MINURSO’s continued presence in the region. The mission remains essential in maintaining peace and stability while advancing efforts toward self-determination for the Sahrawi people through a referendum .
