The International University Observatory on Western Sahara (OUISO) has urged French President Emmanuel Macron to reconsider France’s position on Western Sahara in light of a recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling.
The ECJ’s October 4th decision invalidated trade agreements between the European Union and Morocco, citing the lack of sufficient evidence to demonstrate Morocco’s control over Western Sahara. This ruling has significant implications for the ongoing Western Sahara conflict.
In a letter to President Macron, OUISO highlighted that France’s stance, which recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, contravenes international law and the ECJ’s ruling. The Observatory emphasized the importance of respecting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, as enshrined in numerous international agreements.
OUISO warned that the ECJ’s decision strengthens the position of the Sahrawi people and their legitimate representative, the Polisario Front, on the international stage. The Observatory urged France to support a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict, based on dialogue and respect for the rights of the Sahrawi people.
The Observatory concluded by expressing its willingness to engage in discussions with French authorities to promote a more equitable and sustainable approach to the Western Sahara conflict.
