The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has strongly condemned the recent harassment of journalists Ahmed Ettanji and Mohamed Mayara from “Equipe Media” by Moroccan occupying authorities in Western Sahara.

On October 9, the journalists were detained and threatened with arrest and expulsion while visiting family and reporting in the city of Boujdour.

CPJ views these actions as a blatant violation of press freedom and a direct assault on the journalists’ right to work without fear of intimidation.

Yeganeh Rezaian, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator, expressed deep concern, stating, “This restriction on press freedom is part of an ongoing pattern of silencing independent voices in the region.” Rezaian urged authorities to ensure the protection of journalists and uphold their fundamental right to work freely.
