The Government of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Polisario Front expressed their strong condemnation today in an official statement regarding French President Emmanuel Macron’s stance, announced during a speech before the Moroccan Parliament, in which he recognized Morocco’s alleged sovereignty over the occupied Western Sahara.

The Sahrawi Republic considers this position a clear support for Moroccan military occupation and a violation of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

The statement highlighted that this position contradicts the United Nations Charter and its relevant resolutions regarding the decolonization of Western Sahara and is inconsistent with France’s responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council. It further stated that this French support for Moroccan occupation effectively removes France from any role in the United Nations’ efforts to decolonize Western Sahara, Africa’s last colony.

Additionally, the statement emphasized that this French stance would exacerbate instability in North and West Africa and represents an interference in the rights of peoples to independence.

The statement concluded by affirming that the Sahrawi people, led by the Polisario Front, are determined to continue their struggle by all legitimate means, including armed resistance, to achieve their inalienable rights to freedom and full independence.
